Deconstructing Characters

Protagonist: Tony
  • Tony has a white and blue color motif.
  • Backlighting; bright colors create a glowing halo effect.
  • His broad shoulders and slim lower body create an inverted triangle shape.

This picture relates my character in multiple ways.

One way that this picture represents Tony is color scheme;   my character is a mix of blue and white. This picture uses a mix of soft blue and white tones. These two colors provide a feeling of goodness and comfort, two things that Tony tries to bring to the world.

This picture also gives a sense of speed. The white "wisps" seem to be darting away from the frame of the picture, showing speed and power.

This picture is connected to Tony in the way that both of them are highlighted by backlighting.

Backlighting provides its subjects power, focus, and a sense of mystery. It forces the viewer to focus on the affected subject, lending power and attention.

Tony is backlit which makes him glow. Visually, he is given a general sense of good because this creates a "halo" effect.

Johnny Bravo is only similar to Tony in body shape. They are both roughly triangular characters, giving them a strong, aggressive image (maybe not so much Johnny).

Tony's broad upper body gives him a solid, intimidating look.

Antagonist: Nikolai
  • Nikolai has a black and red color motif.
  • A mix of spotlighting and shadow create a dark area surrounding Nikolai.
  • Nikolai is basically rectangular in shape, showing balance and power.

The overwhelming sense of black offset by the tinge of red in this picture strongly connects with Nikolai's color scheme.

By adding a touch of red into his design, Nikolai receives a "sinister" feel; black by itself emits power and darkness, but becomes much more dynamic and evil when mixed with red.

Nikolai is an evil character and is visually represented accordingly. Black and red combine to create a very powerful shadow surrounding the character.

Nikolai is already easy to identify as an evil character without shadows. By adding shadows surrounding him, senses of mystery and darkness are crafted.

A shadow hangs over/around Nikolai, making him slightly harder to see and ultimately adding to the feeling of evil oozing from his persona.

The Hulk is a great example of a powerful, square-shaped character. By using a wide upper body as well as a strong base, Nikolai and The Hulk seem well-balanced and strong.

Where the triangle connects with a mix of speed and power, Nikolai's square shape provides pure power. Brute strength and balance are both associated with Nikolai.

The square shape perfectly complements Nikolai's key qualities: power, darkness, and aggression.
